BA(Hons) M Clin & Health Psych., PhD

Counselling to me means walking alongside another person and sharing their deepest feelings and stories of innermost importance. By pondering impasses, reviewing life experiences, sharing painful memories and exploring meaning in the flow of conversations, a room is made for healing and the opening of new pathways. While I want to hear about the sticky and troublesome aspects of a person’s life, I am also interested in sharing and celebrating their uniqueness. I consider everyone as capable to steer well through life, to develop and grow as a person and to live in a state of wellness even amidst some big life challenges. As a humanist I hold the view that the person-centred approach to counselling is the key to meeting another person in a way that fosters growth. The essence of counselling is to create a space in which the client can discover that they have the abilities and wisdom to lead a rewarding life and to face life with confidence and a sense of mastery is in. While I also work through modalities that can make transitions easier, I believe that working collaboratively with the other rather than treating symptoms or problems is the core ingredient for lasting change. My stance also underpins my research interests. Believing that people can recover from even very adverse life experiences has underpinned my research into resilience and adaptation as well as adult development in terms of self and identity. Similarly, I am also interested in researching pathways to support cancer patients in dealing with this illness and on their road to wellness. In teaching counselling trainees I draw from over twenty years experience as a practitioner as well as my ongoing curiosity to learn more and hence engagement with research. Meeting students in a person-centred way I enjoy promoting their professional skills development through interactive and reflective learning opportunities, and seek to encourage them to commit to and engage in life-long learning and ongoing professional development.
